WERYO

2023

For those seeking inner peace

As part of this assignment, we were given the freedom to design a bowl while experimenting with one of three materials: concrete, solid wood, or metal. The focus was not on a predefined function, but rather on exploring the relationship between material, form, and use. This open-ended brief created the opportunity to experiment not only technically, but also conceptually.

For my design, I developed WERYO, a bowl/object made of brushed stainless steel with an almost mystical appearance. The object balances between functional design and sculpture, deliberately raising the question of what tranquility still means today in a world filled with distractions and constant stimuli.

WERYO functions as an incense holder, meditation object, or decorative accessory. As the incense burns, the object invites the user to slow down, reflect, and experience a moment of inner peace—even while absentmindedly scrolling through a phone. The design therefore contains a subtle irony: the object does not promise true zen, but instead confronts the user with the ongoing search for it.

By working with metal, I was able to experiment with reflection, texture, and precision. The brushed stainless steel gives the object a cool, almost futuristic appearance, while the incense smoke adds softness and atmosphere. In this way, the bowl becomes more than a functional object; it transforms into a small ritual piece that balances spirituality, design, and contemporary consumer culture.

Zen not included.

Remove ashes at your discretion.
