FLOW

Old walls, new attitude

2024

For this design assignment, we were tasked with designing a permanent living space within an existing architectural context. The project involved transforming the entire interior of a chapel and integrating all essential residential functions, fully tailored to a chosen resident profile. While functionality was an important consideration, the primary focus lay on the relationship between the inhabitants’ identity, the spatial structure, and the overall interior design.

For my project, I selected the profile “sensual and colourful”: a couple who experience their home in a highly sensory way, where contrasts, forms, materials, and colours create a rich and immersive spatial experience. The interior was designed to subtly connect different functions while simultaneously creating unexpected perspectives throughout the journey through the space.

Based on these principles, I developed FLOW, an interior concept that explores movement, colour, and experience within the setting of a former chapel. The historic architecture serves as the backdrop for a contemporary and playful living environment in which monumentality and intimacy are in constant dialogue.

FLOW transforms the chapel into a vibrant living landscape where each space reveals a new surprise. The interior flows organically from one zone to the next, supported by bold colours, soft transitions, and sculptural elements that evoke a sense of energy, optimism, and curiosity. Moving through the home becomes an experience in itself, with perspectives continuously shifting and spaces gradually unfolding.

While the openness of the chapel creates a strong sense of connection, privacy is intentionally limited. On the first floor, a bright pink bedroom functions as an enclosed capsule within the larger composition. An intimate retreat that contrasts with the open and dynamic living areas below. Even the journey to this space contributes to the overall experience: the staircase becomes a small physical challenge, as if privacy must first be earned.

The design places a strong emphasis on materiality, colour, and formal contrasts to create a sensual living experience. At the same time, considerations of circularity and sustainability informed the project through the careful preservation of existing structures and the reinterpretation of the building’s historical context.

FLOW ultimately becomes more than a home. It is a spatial experience where old and new merge, where monumentality takes on a playful character, and where living is transformed into a continuous journey of discovery.
